OK … At the start equipment at the start. When the 1490 was at the start unhindered in 2009, the firmware was so buggy that the unit even suffered from spontaneous reboots … IN MID ROUTE! Occasionally it would not even regenerate over again without the 10 second hold on the on pin. THOUSANDS of these units were returned to COSTCO who got the original release. In fact, so many were returned that Garmin in fact unhindered this manufactured goods over again … as a refurbished unit. The only chat being loading new firmware and packing it in a colorless box.
So now … for under $200 you can get a new … very nearly … Nuvi with the best form thing, feature set, and … now … rock levelheaded firmware on the promote.
Here is what to do …
    1. Buy this unit … just get it.
    2. As soon as it arrives, scan the Amazon red tape … you’ll need it for step 4
    3. Log on to [...] and have a crack to catalog the unit (you will need the S/N)
    4. If you cannot catalog the unit … you likely cannot … call Garmin support (brilliant USA based support) and tell them you cannot catalog your refurbished unit. They will question you to send them proof of contemporary buy … at once send by e-mail the Amazon red tape scanned in step 2. They will make an access on the spot and you can catalog aptly away. Also clarify that you want new maps. They can hook you up with a download of the newest maps since you are a new title-holder.
    5. Download and bed in Garmin’s free Webupdater program. You will need that to get the latest firmware updates. Latest translation was issued May 10, 2010 and is translation 4.10.
    6. Finally … bed in in your car and take pleasure in.

I know, all this takes time. The new map downloads alone are 2 hours, and the scanning thing … well, just know that it is worth it. The 5″ screen is awe-inspiring and since the pledge is unchanged, all is larger and clearer. Audio is louder and clearer on this develop. Array life is best. Bluetooth now works very well. The eco info is very helpful and the transfer is exact now … in this latest firmware. Lane help is ‘da bomb. And don’t not dredge up in this area the modest extras like an awe-inspiring photo viewer and available micro SD slot (I place in an 8 Gig card and Nuvi had no vex conception it.)
All and all, you notch huge as a result of Garmin’s fleeting sighted choice to release an unfinished manufactured goods too ahead of schedule. But now that the firmware is fixed … WOW!!!

I bought this item after much comparison with the others available. This item was refurbished by Garmin, but still had a 1 year factory warranty, so why pay full retail? I just establish this same GPS at a community major retail store for $449.99, so my $243 buy fee was a bargain, especially with free shipping!Garmin nüvi 1490/1490T 5-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Transfer (Factory Refurbished)

Facial appearance – I wanted multi-point mapping abilities & skill upload routes from my PC, cause I volunteer for the MS150 and Tour de Cure bicycle actions that have manifold break points (rest stops) and a send that zig-zags all over foundation.

Facial appearance – I liked the thought of a larger screen (5 inch), the lifetime transfer benefit, the built in bluetooth speakerphone, and Garmin’s reputation.

Map Upgrades – I establish that I could buy a lifetime subscription to map updates for a modest over $100, by the 10% discount code Garmin gave me for registering my unit with them. (Note: catalog with Garmin at the start, then buy the map upgrade from their site, save 10%.)

Additional Bits and pieces Bought – I also bought the Garmin friction dash mount to use as a substitution for of the (built-in) suction cup dialogue box mount.Garmin Portable Friction Mount [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]

Who Desires the Stinking Manuals – Being a guy, I didn’t bother with conception any manuals in anticipation of much shortly. Got it straight out of the box, twisted it on and used it for a trip aptly then and here, comparing it side by side with my ancient GPS. I plugged in a destination in this area 160+ miles away concerning throughway highways in Texas, plus some side roads, manifold towns, etc. I went straight from the PO Box, to the carwash before leave-taking town and arresting the highway north to Ft. Hood from San Antonio, TX.

The Garmin 1490T got me here quicker (than the way my ancient GPS tried to send me) by in this area 20 synopsis, cause it took me down a state highway with 60-70mph speeds, as a substitution for of sticking only to US highways.

Audio Directions – Audio feature practically nice in my attitude. Computer female voice, defaulting 80% number setting, simple to hear over road blast even in a shower while pouring.

Bluetooth Speaker Buzz- I figured out how to join my cell buzz to the Garmin 1490T honestly simple, with pin code 1234. I’ve been building and sending calls thru it, frequently as a speaker buzz, but establish that the 1490T in fact pulled down my buzz index and I could dial from here as a substitution for. But it didn’t get 100% of the index. For some reason, it didn’t get all 500 buzz #’s, like it skipped my wife’s cell number. (not excellent). Audio has been reported as excellent from the callers on the additional end, saying some road blast detected, one saying I sounded like I was on a speaker buzz, but practically legible even while highways blast was in background. Don’t try by the speaker buzz while pouring in a shower, too much background road blast from the rain arresting the windshield, etc.

Transfer Alerts – I wasn’t sure how that worked, but trusted it would, since San Antonio, TX, (where I live) was on the list of roofed cities. But as I horde north on IH-35 headed for Austin, TX, all of a hasty a voice came out of nowhere saying “Brutal Transfer Congestion Yet to be, Recalculating Send”. This was in this area 35 miles before the congestion! It took me up into the congested area, then routed me around the majority of it. Wish I had trusted it earlier and I would have popped over to the nearby tollroad miles earlier as a substitution for. To me it was key, I’m not sure how this works (FM transmitter / received built into potential cord) in stipulations of where they get their live transfer info from, but it worked.

Lane Varying Alerts – The visual handbook to varying lanes was more of a “hey, here are two aptly turn lanes yet to be, left two lanes go straight”, etc. Audio was very accurate in saying “stay left for exit to…” or “stay aptly to exit then turn left/aptly, etc.” Very timely alerts and I by no means missed a turn while by it on this trip.

Screen Sight – Simple to read! It alerts me to community alacrity limits when pouring on highways, was only off by 5mph one fleeting stretch of Texas Hwy 195 (alacrity was in fact 60 as a substitution for of 65). Noticed some brightness when the sun hit the screen from behind or from the side, will apply anti-brightness screen like I used on my digital camera to see if that helps in prospect.

Cons: When text messaging received, it says “nameless caller” and stays on the screen, even with sad “ignore” or “pledge”. Have noticed a few times that pop-up screen (while by…

I’ve owned numerous Garmin GPS harvest in the past, and The 1490T is my latest buy. I consider Garmin really the “gold standard” in the manufactured goods meadow. Attractive casing, well engineered and laid out and very intuitive. The five inch screen is bright, basically read in transfer and very colorful, and frankly I can’t be with you why this five inch screen option is not offered on the rest of the high extent Garmin line. Bluetooth between to my I-Buzz 3G S is sound and audio feature both sending and receiving is practically excellent. The interface is simple to input addresses, and the user menu offers a wealth of information you can op for. In conception a additional assess here built-in, the amenable arose over outdated map data, undoubtedly related to the refreb reputation. I too noted older map data in my unit, but with a simple free call to Garmin tech support I was basically able to overcome this problem. The tech support expressive simply questioned me for proof of current buy date from Amazon, which I provided basically and promptly by emailing a copy of my Amazon online send a bigwig a statement. I was then provided with an updated current warranty date, and made eligible for the sixty day initial Garmin online complimentary mapping update. The ensuing download I was then allowable to access owing to my newly set up Garmin tab page gave me the latest North American map soft wear translation 2010.40. The graphic lane chat feature is incredible, as all screen clutter is at once removed as you deal with a major highway brake and are shown a colorful 3D arrow guiding you visually into the assess lane to keep up send. Over again, the five inch screen size shines! The 1490T is state of the art, as long as superb routing, colorful interface, brilliant blu tooth connectivity, and the wonderful lane chat feature…at $199.00 as a refurbished with a full year’s factory warranty..look no additional!
